Raquel García-Tomás is a composer specialising in interdisciplinary creation who completed her Doctorate at the Royal College of Music. Highlights of her career include collaborations with the English National Ballet, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Dresdner Musikfestspiele. Recently she has received the National Award of Music 2020 (Spain), "for the interdisciplinary and innovative character of her personal musical language". Raquel was awarded El Ojo Crítico Música Clásica 2017 granted by RTVE (Spanish Radio and Television Corporation), "for the originality of her artistic approaches and the use and combination of her musical language with new technologies and video creation".
Throughout his career, his music has been performed in venues such as L'Auditori, the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Teatre Lliure, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, the Auditorio Nacional de Música, the Palau de la Música de Valencia, the Auditorio de Zaragoza, the Teatro Español, the Teatros del Canal, the Teatro de la Zarzuela or theAuditorium 400 del Museum National Art Center Queen Sofia. Internationally, his works have been performed in Berlin, Dresden, Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Huddersfield, Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Budapest, Vienna, Orleans, Lyon, Basel, Lausanne, Porto, Edinburgh, Nagoya, Cairo, Rosary. , Buenos Aires and especially in London, where he resided for six years. Raquel has received commissions and collaborated with the London Sinfonietta, the Oslo Sinfonietta, Phace Ensemble, the Contemporary Ensemble of the Cadaqués Orchestra, the Young National Orchestra of Spain, the Madrid Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra Camera Musicae, SIGMA Project, Experimental Funktion, CrossingLines Ensemble, Ensemble Sonido Extremo, Cosmos Quartet, Barcelona Clarinet Players, Barcelona Reed Quintet, BCN216 and PluralEnsemble, among others.
Within the framework of operatic creation, he has worked in DIDO Reloaded (2013), produced by Òpera de Butxaca and Nova Creació, and has been awarded, thanks to the project Go, ÆNEAS, go!, with the Berliner Opernpreis'14 of the Neuköllner Oper in Berlin. In 2015, it premiered disPLACE - History of a house (libretto by Helena Tornero and stage direction by P. Pawlik) at the Viennese festival MusikTheaterTage Wien, an opera that was reinterpreted at the Teatros del Canal as part of the Teatro Real de Madrid 2016/17. In the 2017/18 season, he composed the monodrama Blue whale (text by Victòria Szpunberg) for actress, orchestra, choir and electronics that premieres at the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya under the stage direction of Xavier Albertí and musical direction by Edmon Colomer. In 2018, he created the puppet opera I'm a narcissist together with H. Tornero and M. Pazos, which premieres in the general program of the 2018/19 seasons of the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Teatro Español and the Teatro Lliure. This opera was nominated for the International Opera Awards 2020 (World Premiere category) and was awarded an Alícia Prize by the Catalan Music Academy in the Interdisciplinary category.
Together with Irène Gayraud and Marta Pazos, Raquel is creating her new opera, 'Alexina B.' (granted with the Beca Leonardo of the BBVA Foundation), which will be premiered in the 2022/23 season of the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
