JULES STRENS: Danse funambulesque (1925) 10′
EDWARD ELGAR: Chanson de matin, op. 15 n. 2 (1889-90) 4 ′
VASILY KALINNIKOV: Symphony no. 1 in G minor (1894-95) 35 ′
Carlos Ramón, the deputy director of the Symphony Band, proposes a very interesting programme that will reveal the range of sounds that can be produced by contemporary symphony bands.
The well-known Chanson de matin of Edward Elgar will be framed by the final apotheosis of the Danse funambulesque of the Belgian Strens and Symphony no. 1 by Vasily Kalinnikov in a band version by master Jan Cober. Despite dying very young, Kalinnikov's talent was appreciated by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, and his music transports us to the essence of Russian Romanticism, with inspired melodies and a distinguished style.
