Program

Saxophone and clarinet player Lluc Casares is one of the most dynamic Catalan jazz musicians today. Trained at the Escola Superior de MĂşsica de Catalunya and the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam, he currently lives in New York, where he is a member of the prestigious Artist Diploma Ensemble of the Juilliard School of Music under the direction of Wynton Marsalis.

Casares’ music is characterised by the combination of two elements which, a priori, may seem opposing: composition and improvisation. This is demonstrated in his latest recording Sketches Overseas (Outside in Music, 2018), in which the precise arrangements of the pieces always leave room for the most avant-garde improvisation. Powerful bass lines, percussive arrangements and careful melodies place Casares' music within the aesthetics of so-called Straight Ahead Jazz.
